Suggestion for easier post-install config esp. dialup users

It would be awesome if a newbie could quickly and easily get DVD
playback working by following simple instructions in a HOWTO.

 1) If the hardware is new, install and run 'regionset'.
 2) Enable such and such source in sources.list, via synaptic.
 3) Locate and install this and such list of packages.
 4) Rent a DVD and watch a movie.

On this front, isn't there a Free jvm now that can do that?  I thought
there was...  I rarely need Java myself.
