when you receive a file with xchat this is placed in ~/.xchat2 wouldn't ~/download/ be better?

With a default desktop, yes.

I't snot obvious because you can't see it.  Basically my point is that
clicking "Computer -> Home" in the panel menu and then clicking the
'downloads' folder is not obvious or intuitive.  With the default
setup the file just appears and can be delt with appropriately.

It's not difficult but if we are going to add a Downloads folder to
the default desktop then we should probably add a few others as well
(eg, Documents).
