when you receive a file with xchat this is placed in ~/.xchat2
wouldn't ~/download/ be better?

But what happens if you use your desktop in a different language?
Download is telecharger in french for example.
Download should be shown in the default language.
What about using a .Download/ folder and let gnome-vfs show that as
Download or Telecharger (French for download) or ... (what ever your
default language is)
the programs write to .Download/ but the user will open the map by using
the virtual link created by gnome-vfs. (in the default language)
