Speaking from the other side of the fence, one of the things I love
about Debian is that they do support multiple versions of Python. Not
all, perhaps, quite so well as the primary version, but with
applications running on servers that don't get upgraded just to bump
Python's version number, it's a big plus that I can do at least most
development and testing on the same workstation. From that point of
view, at this time 2.2 is of more importance to me than 2.4. Frankly,
I doubt 2.4 will be of more than academic interest to me for, oh, maybe
a year or so - certainly I won't be migrating any of the production
machines during the school year.

I don't know how relevant this point of view is to Ubuntu's desktop
focus. It probably would be an issue for me w.r.t. using Ubuntu on the
servers I manage just because it would make verifying proper operation
of all the homegrown apps on a new Python version yet another blocker
for upgrading most of them. When that has to be done in the time left
over after everything else is done... well, sometimes it seems to take
forever to get them all checked off. :-/

There has grown up in the minds of certain groups in this country
the notion that because a man or corporation has made a profit
out of the public for a number of years, the government and the courts
are charged with the duty of guaranteeing such profit in the future,
even in the face of changing circumstances and contrary public interest.
This strange doctrine is not supported by statute nor common law. -- RAH
