Not really. It adds complexity to the system, and you cannot move
partitions and install another OS on it anyway.
As far as desktop systems are concerned, IMHO making everything a
single / partition is an acceptable solution.
The only other partition that might make sense on a desktop system
is /home, so that one can upgrade without
bothering with backups.
