Ubuntu dial-up use.

Many, if not most software modems will work with linux.  Most have
proprietairy drivers, but several GPL drivers are already in
existance.

To suggest to a user that they should buy different hardware is
somewhat rude.

Perhaps someone can help with the packaging of these drivers for
Debian. That would make their availablility to Ubuntu a fact of
life...
