Thank you for the report. Looks like a straightforward bugfix is needed.
Does a bug exist in Launchpad to track this problem in Ubuntu? That
won't make developers magically appear to do the work, but would be a
first step so that any interested developers can coordinate.

A full backport would need special justification under
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#When. A straightforward
bugfix is much more trivial to get landed under SRU policy.
