Well, it *was* to be a tomorrow morning problem, but your mention of
depreciated made me think and look up something.
I was using a now depreciated mode line in my grub config. I kept seeing
what I expected to see and not what was actually there.

So, chalk that one up to a defective keyboard-chair-mouse triad.
