By default, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS should use GRUB 2, which uses
/boot/grub/grub.cfg rather than /boot/grub/menu.lst.  It is unclear to
me whether you're aware of this and thus are checking the correct
location.

You should check whether 'lsb_release -a' prints all the correct
information for your situation.

There should be no relevant difference between 12.04 and 12.10 here.
