I have just complained:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evolution/+bug/13983/comments/25

and the essence is this:
-----------------------------
So my recommendations is to clearly state, in the account definition,
something like this:
Server type: IMAP (Partly implemented)
Description: For reading and storing mail on IMAP servers. Delete and
Search act in POP3 style.

Until such time the RFC 3501 is implemented regarding Delete and Search.
-----------------------------

Please do not misunderstand the word Delete, it refers to the action of
deleting an email from a user's point of view and not the IMAP DELETE
command, which is for deleting a while account.

It is a very old issue that repeatedly comes up. It might be that the
Evolution team is not williing to correctly implement the full IMAP
protocal, but meanwhile I think we should offer a clear explanation during
account setup in Evolution, that Delete and Search are not true IMAP
implementations. This way the user have a chance to consider before
trusting his or her email to the Evolution client.

My suggestion in https://bugs.launchpad.net/evolution/+bug/13983/comments/25
-----------------------------
Server type: IMAP (Partly implemented)
Description: For reading and storing mail on IMAP servers. Delete and
Search act in POP3 style.
-----------------------------
is pretty straight forward and also very damaging to the image. However,
honesty might be better in the long run and if nothing happens at
Evolution, then possibly Canonical might consider another standard email
client.
