    * I am writing you this email from windows because I can't connect
      to the internet using Ubuntu 8.10 and NetworkManager.
    * I am using  a Compaq nc8430 notebook with a Sierra Wireless
      USBConnect 881 3G interface which is connected to the AT&T
      wireless broadband network.
    * I was never given any password to use the wireless broadband
      connection. Just plug and play in windows.
    * I have created a live disk of ubuntu 8.10 and booted to it.
      Everything appears ok.
    * When ubuntu boots, the led's on the wireless broadband interface
      show that it is ready to operate.
    * I then drop down the NetworkManager from the system tray using the
      right mouse button and attempt to configure the connection.
    * I click the wireless broadband tab and enter United States for the
      location. Next screen I click the AT&T selection. Then I click
      finish.
    * When I click on the NetworkManager icon in system tray the
      connection appears on the list.
    * I click on the radio button in front of that selection and the
      menu promptly closes. The Icon has a small red triangle on the
      lower right corner. I watch the interface led's and the active
      light flickers momentarily.
    * Reopen the NetworkManager menu and the radio button is not selected.
    * I can't get online.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want out of windows but ubuntu
is useless to me unless I can get online. My desktop uses ubuntu 8.04
exclusively and it works great except that I still have to use dialup
for internet connection. I would like to use the wireless broadband for
both installations. Also, I'm trying to boot ubuntu 8.10 on this
notebook from a USB drive I created from the live disk without success.
But that's another story I'll deal with later. Help, Please.

Ted
