I talked some time ago (1 year) to a gedit developer and he told me
that he had a bunch of other things to accomplish things. He wasn't
countrary in line of principle.

As for ubuntu I usually received answers like "a beginner shuold not
mess with .. ".
I really hope this feature get implemented. It's so weird it's not already.
