Backups need to be able to do a few different things:
a) Communicate with NAS boxes that identify them sevles as backup
servers via zeroconf
b) Write to DVD or CD media to write progressive backups
c) Write to external drivers such as usb dongles or full disks
d) Store files on ftp servers or other web services
e) Should have a number of profiles which back up:
i) a single users data in their home directory
ii) a single users profile, all hidden configuration files
iii) All users files and configurations
iv) The system state including a list of all installed packages, logs
and a backup of important configuration files in etc.
f) You then need a manner of recovering the information, if you can
recover system state and user profiles on installation that would be
ideal.
It would be nice to have a user accessable tool that takes the burden
of backing up. not very many people do it a serious enough degree to
protect their data.
