-------------- next part --------------
Sir,

I have obtained the DVD of the Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as distributed by the Linux For You magazine published from India. I was just trying to install it on an AMD 64-bit 3200+ machine with 512 Mb ram and Gigabyte sis based motherboard. My experience is as follows:
1. It installed. Thanks indeed.
2. The desktop LTS product does not give any chance to choose any of the programmes for installation, though it has quite a rich kitty of packages as seen in the 'pool'.
3. Even in one of the most ommon software, openoffice, it installs only a subset of that is available on the DVD. For example it does not install the base (database part) and the math part among others. Also, some of the languages are simply not installed and later on the user has to intervene.
4. The machine that I have has one CDROM drive and one DVD RW drive. While installing packages through synaptic it keeps on asking for the CD/DVD from /cdrom/ device only, while it was on the /cdrom1/ device in my computer, as configured by the 8.04 LTS by itself.

How to do the above mentioned tasks in a more interactive and easy manner, would someone will elaborate?
I shall be thankful for the same.

[The installation need to be made much more flexible and interactive/participative if the user chooses to be so, at least for the software packages to be installed on the machine.]

With grateful regards,

Nagin Chand
