My plan is to have them both installed by parallel, and modify
discover-data to use -intel on new installs for everything newer than
i945. This should minimize regressions.

There are still some important things missing in xf86-video-intel, for
example, we've seen regressions in terms of hotkey device switching. :/

We'll likely keep -i810 for the i8xx by default for the foreseeable
future though.
