GNOME not mounting encrypted drives

Most probably. I bet hal caught the
/dev/mapper/temporary-cryptsetup-yadayada device instead of the final
one in /dev/mapper. Nice race condition.

It's on my list of things to fix, but I haven't found time for it yet.
If you want to have a go at it, I'd appreciate. :)
