Fail to boot to X (20161007 yakkety amd64 desktop livecd)

I have filed bug #1631519 [1] and I think it's xorg, but using a ThinkPad
x230 with a monitor attached to the mDP port you do not get to X on boot.
If the external monitor is attached after booting to X you get window
trails.

I have also noted this failure in the QA tracker[2].

I can try to help debug this if you have suggestions.
