Hi, Shaolin!  Maybe you'd be interested in the MOTU Mentors [1] program,
where a current developer helps you learn the ropes.

MOTU [2] means "Master of the Universe" and is just a cute phrase we use
for developers that can upload to certain parts of Ubuntu.  That sounds
like the path in which you're interested.  As you write patches for
Ubuntu, they'll be reviewed by current MOTU members until you become one
yourself.
