I know this is an old post (to which I respond) but is this related to the
upgrade error messages I'm seeing:
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: warn: disk does not exist, so falling back to
partition device /dev/xvda1
I've seen this on 11.10 and 12.4 AMD64.
If so, it appears the correct location for this edit is actually
/etc/default/grub on the AMI (at least for 11.10).
But, my problem seems to be the location of the boot device. It seems
upgrading grub creates issues with mounting the /dev/xvda1 location
specified. I'm assuming grub is failing to see the pount point and prefers
something like /dev/sda1, though admittedly I haven't spent much time
narrowing the challenge. This appears to be a failure on AMIs for both
11.10 and 12.4 AMD64, perhaps others.
