The ubuntu images can be run locally. Other ec2 images may be able to run
as a domU, it really depends on the image.
There is info on running UEC images in kvm at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC/Images . The easy path support is
only in the maverick and later images. There are other ways you can get
lucid to work, though.
in the lucid cycle, i was using
https://code.launchpad.net/~smoser/+junk/boothooks . its hacky and not
well documented, but similar to the path that maverick takes now.
