Hi Adrian,
A few points:
- Good to hear that we have an Ubuntero inside SSD ;o)
- I might be able to come on the 24th, but 1) I'm not an approved Ubuntu
Member, although I have been active long enough to answer questions and
stuff 2) I probably can not be there the whole day...
- Are you aware of http://www.thealternative.ch/ ? They do Linux related
promotions and that kind of thing at the ETH, and they have organized
Linux Install events at both the ETH and the Uni in the past semesters.
Side note: The distro they recommend to students is Ubuntu :o) I think
it would be good to keep in touch with those guys whenever there are
Linux related activities at the ETH/Uni.
- Talking about Neptun: It has been bothering me for years that the
Neptun project still collects the Windows Tax on all their IBM laptops.
Why do they still force everyone to buy Windows even though not everyone
chooses to run that software on their machines? I have written to the
Neptun people about it, and I know that the people from
thealternative.ch have talked to them as well (repeatedly, and in person
;o] ), but so far nothing has changed. So my question is: Would you guys
from SSD help us to convince the Neptun people that they *should* offer
laptops without Windows? Help would be really appreciated! I believe
there are two problems why they don't want to change anything: 1) they
don't think there are enough people interested in Windows-free machines
2) it means more work for them (talking to manufacturers etc.). We can't
do anything about point 2), but I believe we (and especially you guys
from SSD) *can* show them that more and more students in fact ask for
free alternative software instead of Windows.
what do you think?
Luzi
