Thanks for the feedback. The machine I had was an HP 620 notebook.
Suspend and resume never did work right except in Windows (neither did
hibernation), and then the touchpad/usb failures and sudden power
losses started.
I'm tempted to try System 76: https://www.system76.com/home/
