Getting Ubuntu in the news

When a newspaper reporter approaches you for an interview, you have to
understand one thing: they've already written their article in their
head. They're coming to you for a few choice quotes, so they can
pretend they're "objectively" reporting someone else's views rather
then tossing off an opinion piece.

It's unlikely you'll be able to change their views or the intent of
the article. Although you might get lucky and get a heavily couched
"but some people disagree" line, they're going to write what they're
going to write.

So how do we get Ubuntu in the news?

People who write newspaper articles don't particularly care about
technical superiority. It's unlikely you'll catch their interest with
computer security stories. Software freedom is likely to go way over
their heads. The only thing I can think of that Ubuntu has that's
likely to get their attention is community.

Show them a movement, and they'll write about it. Get people out and
involved and you'll catch their interest. Better yet, get out there
and help other people in your community and let them know you're going
to do it.

Don't worry about stupid fluff pieces in the Life section. Get out
into the world and do good works and make people take notice.

Darcy.
