There is a way to add a CD to the synaptics repositories. See this link.

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/simple-package-management-with-synaptic-package-manager-in-ubuntu.html

The info on adding a CD source is near the end. I have not used it myself but
looks like it should work OK. If not, there are other reports on how to do
it. Google "Using Synaptic with CD"

Mac
Hi Mac:
Hi I went to this Link, and found the area, which talked about using CD
repositories, it was written for 6.04 all the Links there, about
explanations of how this works are 404 Not Found. My Linux books do not
have the Command structure in them for Apt using CD's. On Ubuntu there
was one page about using CD's only they talk about using a USB Drive
instead of using the CD/DVD Repositories. There is no mention on how to
use CD/DVD Repositories.

This afternoon, I figured, lets just browse the CD/DVD Repositories, and
find a big Program, like 350 Megs in size. Open Arena fits the bill. I
Found the Program on the DVD. Found the Data File on the DVD. Installed
the Data file. Then tried to install the Program, and there was a file
missing Libopenal1_1.4.272-2_i386.deb I did a Search on Synaptic and it
did not find it. So then I thought lets Take the Program File and copy
it to the /var/cache/apt/archives directory. I had the file on my
Desktop so in terminal I cd /home/alf/Desktop and then that happend.
sudo cp openarena_0.8.1-1_i386.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/ That stored
that file into that area. Then I found in ADD/REMOVE in the Games Area
Open Arena and Went ahead and Downloaded it. As The Program was already
in Var it just downloaded the missing lib file, then it installed Open
arena, which in total would have taken about 10 days -24 hours a day, to
download on Dial-up. The Lib File was only 64 K, so that took less than
a minute.

Trouble is now, that the LOCK FILE in /var/cache/apt/archives/ is still
OPEN. So downloading other files with Synaptic or ADD/REMOVE results
in:

Can't get a lock on the Download Directory.

How does one close the Lock File from the OPEN state to a Closed state?

Perhaps I need to start over with Synaptic? :(

What would be very nice, is a little menu in Synaptic, that allows you
to make use of the Internet for downloading Files,

OR

Allows you to use other sources on CD/DVD, or USB DRIVES. It does not
want to Update or Check from CD/DVD Drives, and it does not add the info
from the Index Files to Synaptic, and I'm going Bleary Eyed trying to
find out how to do this, from Searches, most of which don't work when I
try them!

Alfred!
