I currently have two different printers working under Ubuntu.
An old Lexmark z22, which I had to do nothing to/for to get it to work with a USB connection. I have shared it and it works through CUPS just fine.
My other printer is a Brother MFC-XXXX. I have the printing and scanning features of it working flawlessly as well as it being a "network enabled" printer. With it though you must follow the Brother install instructions. It too works through CUPS.
