computer extremely slow

After reading the OP, and looking at the sysinfo, I noticed the following:

Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Ubuntu 9.04

So after Googling "i915 ubuntu 9.04", this information came up at Ubuntu Geek:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/intel-graphics-performance-guide-for-ubuntu-904-jaunty-users.html

'The new and faster acceleration method (UXA) is not enabled by default, due to issues reported by many users. This code is being actively developed, and many stability and performance issues have been resolved in the latest drivers (specifically within the intel driver, libdrm, mesa and the latest kernel 2.6.29.4). Unfortunately, Jaunty will not include the latest versions necessary to improve performance.

"3D performance has regressed compared to the Intrepid release, possibly due to major code changes that have resulted from the introduction to the new acceleration and memory management code (UXA, GEM, DRI2). Due to these changes, there seems to be some regressions in the “legacy” DRI acceleration.'

Solution:

There are two solutions I suggest:

Difficult:
If you want improved performance at the cost of loss of Compiz, then uninstall all Compiz packages.

This consists of running Synaptic Package Manager, then searching for all Compiz-related packages and fully removing all packages.

Easy:
The Safe solution in the URL above.

FWIW I chose the difficult solution even before learning of the given URL back with 8.10 when Compiz gave me a blank screen after installing the upgrade to 8.04 LTS.

That's because my system uses the i845GM, which gives an i915 handle error under Ubuntu => 8.10!
