I upgraded my older Acer laptop with Jaunty last night (dual boot Ubuntu and
Linux).  The update went perfectly.  Under 8.10 I couldn't get Compiz to
recognize the ATI 9000 mobility card, Jaunty recognized it right away.
Another problem with 8.10 was with VPN settings (not saving the "refuse EAP"
setting).  Jaunty has fixed this.  Ever since 8.04 I had not used ubuntu as
much due to video driver problems and VPN issues.  Now that this has been
fixed in 9.04 I'm back to Ubuntu and less on Windows.  

P.S. 9.04 boots much faster.

Thanks for the link Rudy but it's too late, I've already started making
changes....I'm also going to trade in my computer for something different (a
small used computer place in town does this), something with a better
graphics card without these headaches.
?
I can't have the computer mess up like this when I'm not at home to tend to
it because then my wife gets very upset and she's not computer literate so
she could never solve something like this on her own.

That's too bad, it would be a shame to have to reinstall back to an older
version.

Yes, there are several issues (see
http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/fosdem-video/2009/maintracks/ext4.xvid.avi
or https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/317781 for
example) but there are large performance benefits, and those issues are
close to being resolved. I did say "thinking about" it :D In the end, I
think I will wait for several of those issues to be resolved: 1) online
defrag - not a huge issue, but ext4 isn't ready until that's implemented
2) the issue with tiny dotfiles (etc) being lost on crash is actually
not ext4's fault, but a workaround is either in the works or newly
applied (I'm not sure where to look to figure that out) and as I am on a
laptop, I'd like that resolved before adopting (though of course
applications need to be fixed) 3) can't remember... I think it was that
converting back and forth isn't ready (maybe I'm wrong on that...)

So, those are enough for me to wait. But now I know better what I'm
doing when I do transition.

I'm quite happy with Jaunty so far.   I've got a niggling thing going
on that's likely related to the intel driver issues, and one complaint
that's surfaced recently.

up to you to revert.  they are not going to change that stupidity

gconftool -s --type bool /apps/update-notifier/auto_launch false

and restart X to get back to the old preferred better notification

I didn't have to restart X, it just started working as soon as I changed
the gconf key.
