Thanks for the link Rudy but it's too late, I've already started making changes....I'm also going to trade in my computer for something different (a small used computer place in town does this), something with a better graphics card without these headaches.
I can't have the computer mess up like this when I'm not at home to tend to it because then my wife gets very upset and she's not computer literate so she could never solve something like this on her own.

That's too bad, it would be a shame to have to reinstall back to an older version.
Have you tried the work-around suggestions at the Ubuntu troubleshooting page for this problem:
