Here is a Link to my Posting on how to get an Optiplex 260's Intel 845G
On-Board Graphics to allow Logins to proceed "Normally" under Ubuntu 8.10
(that said Ubuntu 8.04 occasionally has problems with its Logins):

With some the above mentioned work arounds in place I just attempted a
CD-ROM Based Upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04, which left my Intel
845G's Graphics in such a "Jumbled" State that I did NOT have a "Usable"
Login Screen (although Remote NX Sessions were "Fine")!!! Which I then
followed with a Clean Installation of Ubuntu 9.04, which at first was NOT
"Usable" until I completed a dpkg "Check" and xorg "Repair" from Ubuntu
9.04's "Rescue" Console... After which Ubuntu 9.04 seems "Good" on my
Optiplex 260 with its Intel 845G On-board Graphics, although that has only
been since yesterday???

Intel 845G Graphic is mentioned as a "Known" Problem the Release Notes for
both Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 9.04!!!

NOTE: After Ubuntu 9.04 was finally coaxed into "Behaving", I found it
much faster than Ubuntu 8.04/8.10 had been on the same Optiplex
       GX260!!!

Yes "Optiplex GX60" in my March Posting was a "Typo"...
