hardy sound

I had the same problem with the settings at "Autodetect" and
"PulseAudio." I changed all the settings to ALSA and it worked.
It seems strange that your test sounds would work, but your
applications wouldn't have sound. Almost seems as though the volume
was turned low. There is a utility that you can run in the console --
alsamixer -- to make changes to the sound output. You can try it out
in Gutsy (7.10) and see if that makes a difference. You can try the
live CD for Hardy (8.04) and give alsamixer a try there.
Having said that, you're probably better off with Gutsy if it's
working for you. I had a nightmare of an upgrade and eventually had to
do a clean install. However, in my case, wireless networking was a
huge problem for my particular card in 7.10. It works in 8.04 and is
stable.
