You have certainly not been a pain. You're welcome to ask questions any
time. But Mathieu is right about the Ubuntu forums - they're very helpful
and informative, and probably the best place to start. I think most of your
questions have been handled there at some point. There are also good howtos
accessible through the forums.

Final bit of advice: don't try installing software at the command line. Use
Synaptic. That way you know all dependencies are met. But you'll find out
all about that in the Ubuntu forums.
