Final bit of advice: don't try installing software at the command line. Use Synaptic. 
Actually the command line "aptitude" will also install all the dependent software correctly and is faster.

The first time I learned Unix the first 4 months were the hardest, after that everything was easy. 

Probably the best way for Bob to learn is to meet up with people a local linux club, so people can help him directly.
