I give up (was problems as newbie: Bob)

Hi Bob,
I can feel your pain. I went through something like that at first, too, only
it was trying to get wireless networking working. I quit at least three
times, but Linux wouldn't let me go. Finally I found a distribution that
would work with what I had, and then got a better laptop with a
Linux-friendly networking card. Now I resent having to go back into Windows
(which I do just to break Audible books into MP3 files). So I predict you'll
be back, too.
One disloyal thing I might suggest is that you have a look at Xandros. It's
a Canadian distribution that handles audio and video easily. I used it for a
year or so until I discovered Ubuntu, and I think it might be just a
milli-notch more friendly for some people.
I think if we were standing beside you we could probably get eveyrthing
working the way you like it in Ubuntu in maybe an evening, but it's so hard
to describe things clearly by email (and not sound a little abrupt or
patronizing or whatever). So maybe give it a rest for a bit until the
planets realign into a Linux-friendly pattern for you. It will only get
easier and better the longer you wait.
Cheers,
Leslie
