Memtest looks for defects in your RAM. The kernel will put something in RAM 
and then when it is retrieved, if it has been corrupted this can cause 
crashes and otherwise inexplicable errors. The longer you run the test, the 
better because the memtest program will try different bit patterns. I have 
has RAM that was perfectly fine except for one particular pattern of bits 
which caused corruption.
