Bootdisc or Rescue Disc.

Honestly, even though this is an Ubuntu list, I'd say get a small, fast
booting distro such as Damn Small Linux in order to quickly recover data and
diagnose other problems.
I always have a CD of it on hand, and it's been good help, especially when
working with older machines.
