Sign-on Problems

Houston, we have a problem...

Can't seem to wrap my mind around this one. Hoping you veterans can
send me in the right direction.

I'm running Edgy on an old Dell box. Each time I log in I have to do
it twice. First time, after inputting my password, Nautilus opens, the
upper and lower bars appear, but my desktop does not. My graphic does
not show nor do the files I have on the desktop. Not even the default
graphic shows. Just a plain beige field. What's more, between three
and 14! instances of File Browser open automatically on the desktop
before anything else can happen -- usually five. If I navigate to my
desktop, or any other folder, everything is in order. All my files are
intact. Even my admin status is intact. To correct the problem I have
to off, normally, and log in again. After that everything is fine --
until next time. Any ideas?
