Thanks for the advice.  It fails with kernel 4.13 but works with 4.10 so 
I booted into that, did lshw -C video and found It's running the Intel 
i915 driver.  According to https://bugs.freedesktop.org, it's a known 
problem which will probably be fixed in 4.15 .
