When to report upstream?

For bugs that aren't specific to certain hardware, running another
distro in a VM can be helpful for verification. I find Arch Linux
well-suited to the task since it's a rolling release that stays close to
upstream and uses less patching than the Debian family. Once you verify
it there, you should have a look through the program's bug tracker and
recent git commits to make sure you're not reporting a duplicate.
