I also use an optical mouse (Logitech) but the freezes you describe
happened on my system with Firefox 3. Since I don't use Firefox
anymore on Intrepid, there have been no more freezes, 3D still works
fine, using an old ATI Radeon mobile with the free Radeon driver. I
suspect a Flash issue, still trying to trace back.
