Consegui fazer funcionar o bendito 3G no Ubuntu 8.04
O meu modelo é o HUAWEI E226 da Claro,

Dentre muitos Howto's o único que funcionou foi irônicamente o mais fácil (o
último que tentei)
Não sei se as conf anteriores sugiram efeito nessa atual, só sei que está
funcionando uma beleza.
