You can check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/Laptop/Lucid/Reports
Personally, I have an Acer Travelmate 4201, and I'm very happy with it. I
have been running ubuntu on it since new (three years ago) and it always
worked pretty well. I recently installed 10.04 without any problems. Battery
life is OK, especially if you switch off your network card.
Mine has been travelling throughout Europe and Africa on a daily basis.
Still no glitches after three years of intensive usage (touch wood).
I'm sure the newer models perform better still.
Regards,
Jan.
