Hi,

Just to clarify a few things about laptops with or without Windows. As
JanC said, we are a distributor of PointerSystems (a Sint-Niklaas based
distributor/importer). We mostly buy supermicro servers with them, but
can offer anything they sell, including laptops.

On their pricelist, Win XP is an option. If you take they option, you do
get it pre-installed with Windows, but you get an official (OEM) cd-set,
not just a "recovery cd". This option does cost (quite a bit) more than
50 eur. I think the 50 euro OEM thingies you see at some shops, must be
"upgrade" cds. They sometimes have "promo's" which include windows, but
as a general rule, I can order them without the windows software as
well. There have been one or two exceptions, where MS gave the software
away for free (or almost for free), but normally that's not the case.

To get back on topic: if you are interested in a laptop that's
ubuntu-compatible and allround, have a look at the 1034 range. It's made
by MSI and every piece of hardware in it works well with Ubuntu (but you
need a 2.6.17 kernel if you want the SD slot to work). The only thing I
haven't checked is the modem.

Frank
