Great work, you seems to work faster than me.
Yes CI provides a language class (see
http://www.codeigniter.com/user_guide/libraries/language.html). The CI
language class uses PHP arrays. Later these array could be filled
using gettext to allow the use of Rosetta (see
https://launchpad.net/rosetta) for ease of translation.
For 'users', the supporter application should allow a supporter to
login to edit his/her profile. We could add the needed structure to
the database to assign roles to supporters and have role based ACLs.
The next "big thing" we (Mark, me, other ?) want for the application,
is a ticketing system to hanlde support request (ask for CD sets,
installation help, demo, ...). Reminders could probably go there too.
I hope to find an existing (but flexible and extensible) ticketing
system to save some time and coding. But I didn't start to search.
Meanwhile, email are fine.
