I recently set up a '3 mobile broadband' http://www.three.com.au/ for my
mum (running Ubuntu 9.04).

I needed to ring '3' to get some details that were missing from the
info pack. It was very easy to configure manually - I had to guide 3's
consultant as to what information I needed. And iirc, I had to restart
her machine for the net to kick in. 

My mum has travelled with it: Wodonga, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and it's
worked fine in urban centres... but I'm not too sure what 3's rural
mobile coverage is like if you are heading out in the sticks.
