G'day Melissa and Ubuntu-au e-list,
Actually, I'm replying to Melissa D's post to this e-list. I probably
*should* change the subj of this msg to something like "My
reintroduction - I use 2 flavours of Linux: Mandriva 2010.0 Free &
Mint 8 'Helena' (2010 Free)" (I have not configured this email acct to
let me change the subj of reply msgs... I think it's one of the
hundreds of gmail settings which I have not enabled *SMILE* )
I first subscribed to this e-list a couple of years back when I first
started as a newbie linux Ubuntu user and self-installer and admin of
my home Ubuntu pc.
Now in 2010, I have 2 computers running different flavours of Linux:
(a) a desktop pc with very good specs incl 4 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD. I
forget what the processors but it's pretty fast. Maybe 2.3 G Hz dual
processor (?). I have an old Dell brand monitor so I'm pretty sure
that it cannot handle 3D desktop effects.
The OS installed is Linux Mandriva 2010.0 Free 32 bit. This was
upgraded from Mandriva 2009 Free via an online upgrade and online
installation. The system is pretty stable but I am having some
problems installing the necessary packages for networking... 'cos I
didn't know what I was doing ... I was trying to config a small
network with my (b) laptop {explained below}... & it's not happy. I am
currently getting the torrent download of the dvd iso for the Mandriva
2010.0 Free 32bit bootable dvd, so that I can do a clean install of it
(b) a HP Laptop w/similar specs processor, 4 GB RAM, wide LCD display,
500 GB HDD, wireless internal modem. (It came pre-installed with M$
Windows)... I didn't even bother booting it up or backing it up... I
just did a clean install of Mint 7. That was quite some time ago. A
few weeks back I installed a clean ver of Linux Mint 8 from a bootable
live Mint 8 cd -- downloaded via iso from the Mint download site. It's
what I am using now, to compose the email.
Both (a) and (b) computers share the same Telstra Bigpond ADSL
Broadband connection to my home, here in West Hobart. Bigpond have
been doing a lot of work lately to upgrade the speed of my connection
(for users, generally, not just me). I use an inexpensive USB hub to
share my Bigpond (older) USB ADSL modem and both computers. This works
well for me to use both pc's to connect to the internet at the same
time. Theoretically, it should be straight forward for me to network
the desktop/laptop together -- but I think I need to reinstall
Mandriva 2010.0 Free onto pc (a) for the bootable dvd I'm currently
downloading.
Anyway, I'm no longer *officially* a Ubuntu user. But Linux Mint 8 is
strongly derived from Ubuntu... So, if it's okay by Melissa I'd like
to stay on this list. Also, it [this e-list] seems to be quite
low-volume so it appeals to me. ;-)))
One final note comparing one small difference 'tween the 2 OSes I use.
I like to use Free Pascal-based GUI RAD Compiler called Lazarus... for
occassional proposed open source development... (nothing serious or
yet gone publc by me for Lazarus). It [Lazarus] is basically a free
Delphi clone developer language... written using itself and compiled
requiring also free pascal. The latest ver of Lazarus OO-Pascal
Delphi-like RAD compiler for Mint 8 the latest ver is 0.9.26.4 and for
Mandriva 2010.0 Free it's 0.9.28.2. Note that if you use Subversion
software to download and compile the source you can use different
snapshots of it. I think the latest stable snapshot of the Lazarus
source is 0.9.29.2. And there are also snapshots of later vers made
daily which are alpha & may not be stable. ( I have not yet learnt to
use subversion, so I'm stuck with the current ver in the package
manager. Learning Subversion is on my todo list.. and there are
tutorials about it on the Lazarus wiki-website.) Not sure which ver
Ubuntu supports as latest.
Cheers ;-))) Happy Linuxing -- whether you are a developer,
administrator or end-user.
