Printing under Ubuntu

Unless you want to spend a whole bunch more money, you won't be able to
scan from anything but the machine directly attached to the printer.

I currently have an Epson (c79) attached to an XP machine, an Epson
CX1500 MFP attached to an XP machine, a Canon BJ-200ex attached to my
Ubuntu firewall and an HP PSC 1610 MFP attached to my Ubuntu desktop

I've had Lexmark in the past.  I like them at work but I hate them at
home.

The best of them all is the Canon black and white bubble-jet circa 1990.
The other Canons are good but you need to clean out the inkwells every
now and then.

The HP is great.  You can refill the cartridges.  It has a super cool
bit where you put a camera card in and it prints out a proof sheet which
you can mark and print photos.

I've heard good things about Brother but I haven't had one for 5 years.

At the end of the day, for me, the equation comes down to whether or not
you can refill the cartridges for THAT PARTICULAR model, and/or the cost
of the refills.  The printer itself is just a commodity item.
