Yes.  Although I would recommend using xubuntu on such a box - see
xubuntu.org  It is generally less resource intensive.  If you have
issues with the GUI install, you could grab the "alternative" cd which
comes with a text based installer, which uses less memory than the live
cd.  In the end you still get a nice x/ubuntu install :)
