Open Office Labels

I am in the process of weaning myself off MS as I anticipate my move to 
Ubuntu.  I am trying to create labels in Open Office but can't seem to 
make it work.  I've been through the help area and tried to follow the 
steps to no avail.

My starting point is a Word table which I re-saved as a .odt file.  
However, I can't create a suitable merge.  Neither can I find an 
understandable step by step guide anywhere.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?
