Yeah thats pretty nasty.
The problem being that certain things have all sorts of whacky 
permissions in all sorts of places.
If you had an identical system, except for data, ie, same packages and 
everything, you could peice it together with scripting or rsync -av 
directory by directory. Its not something I would attempt though - I did 
actually try it recently on an OpenVZ template I was mucking around with 
- think tiny install of dapper server - barely 150Mb, and it still 
didn't work right. Took way too much effort. Recreating turned out easier...
