encryption of external hdd

Hi all,

I want to set my external HDD up with a encrypted partition.
If possible I would like to access it from Ubuntu and Windows (work :-( ).
I would prefer a journaling FS but am not sure if this leads to complications.
By now I use truecrypt with a container at work but have no exp with truecrypt and linux.

Are there comparisons of cross platform solutions?
any thoughts?
